An Ariton daycare worker is now waiting to be sentenced after a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl.

Sixty-three-year-old Darrell Snellgrove was arrested and charged for sexually abusing and raping a girl at the daycare where he worked.

He was found not guilty of the first degree rape charge, but guilty of the sexual assault first degree charge

Snellgrove will now be classified as a sex offender after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a 4-year old girl.

"These are really tough cases, to have a 4-year-old victim to come into court on a case and testify," says Chief Assistant District Attorney, Bill Filmore.

Snellgrove worked at Sandy Creek Daycare.

During the trial, Snellgrove's wife said the business lost customers and has closed down.

Even though Snellgrove now faces time behind bars, he, his family and his attorney still stand strong in defending his innocence.

"I personally don't believe he's guilty. He passed two polygraph tests, which tells me he didn't do it. The State of Alabama even did a polygraph test, which he passed," says Defense Attorney William Matthews.

"There was other evidence that corroborated with her testimony, including physical abuse, [which] was shown by the physical evidence in the case," says Filmore.

Many friends and relatives were in the courtroom defending Snellgrove's character, but it wasn't enough to convince the jury he didn't commit the crime of sexual abuse.

The jury did however think there was no penetration, declaring Snellgrove not guilty on first degree rape.

Snellgrove is out on the same $50,000 dollar bond set when he was arrested.

He is now awaiting a sentencing hearing.

Sexual abuse, first degree is a class C felony, which carries a one to 10 year sentence.
