Whiddon Trial

court, trial, jury

A Henry County woman charged in one of the largest embezzlement schemes in the history of the Wiregrass is scheduled to stand trial today in Abbeville.

Forty-two-year-old Susan Whiddon is accused of stealing more than $1 million from an Abbeville engineering firm where she once worked.

Whiddon was arrested in January of last year after an audit revealed the missing funds.

She was originally charged with more than 60 counts of theft of property in connection with more than $800,000 in missing money.

But the on-going investigation eventually led to more than 100 counts of forgery involving another $300,000.

Investigators say Whiddon took that money by writing checks without permission.

She's still being held in the Henry County Jail.
