Prison Overcrowding

Wardens, correctional officers and representatives from the Alabama Employees Union rallied in downtown Montgomery Tuesday.

They're trying to call attention to the overcrowding conditions.

The heat is stifling at the state corrections facility in Elmore County. In Dorm G, the prison's largest, inmates are stacked on top of each other.

Prisons across the state say they are experiencing the same problem.

There is inadequate staffing levels and the loss of vital prison services like access to the Law Library and Chapel.

Alabama Governor Don Siegelman says he is looking to see if there is federal funding available to bail the Corrections Department out of this situation and he is looking for a permanent long-term solution.
