Dothan Agencies Budget Cuts

In the City of Dothan's budget, most departments will see their funding remain steady over the next year.

But, some non-government agencies will see cuts of ten percent and that's just the beginning.

Those who run a local program for senior citizens say these cuts will take a big bite out of their meal service.

Bernice Pittman's Meals On Wheels come from the Quick Senior Citizens Center in Dothan. It's one of the agencies that will get ten percent less funding from the city over the next budget year.

The program will lose $1,800 of its $18,000 city funding. That may not sound like much, but coordinators say they already have to stretch their $65,000 budget to feed 44 seniors a day, five days a week.

And they fear they may have even less to work with if the governor follows through with plans to cut all state funding to non-government programs.

City leaders say they've tried to soften the blow by phasing out the funding.

The Wiregrass Mental Health Center, The Downtown Group and The South Alabama Symphony are several other agencies that will experience cuts.
