City of Dothan Budget Cuts

The City of Dothan has to take a hard look at a new proposed budget and some proposed cuts could affect several key areas.

During Tuesday's City Commission Meeting, City Manager Dennis Rubin presented the city's two-year budget.

It's for fiscal years 2004 and 2005, and recommends cutting funding for personnel, retirement and non-essential services.

In addition, the budget includes revenue from a proposed garbage collection fee and through raising the sales tax on tobacco products.

City Manager Dennis Rubin says if spending is not reduced, the city will run a nearly $5 million shortfall in its unreserved fund balance.

Mayor Chester Sowell says it is time for the city to take a closer look at what's spent.

Any additional changes to the $244 million budget will be addressed by the city manager next April.
