Lawmakers return to Montgomery for Special Session today, a week after Gov. Riley's tax plan was defeated by voters.
Gov. Riley will tell Legislators his plans to cut state spending $77 million below the current year. The new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
State officials said the financial picture for the following fiscal year looks even worse.
House Speaker Seth Hammett and Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley said one of the toughest fights in the Special Session will be over Riley's plan to eliminate state funding for programs like Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
The Legislature will be back in Montgomery in February to start work on another set of state budgets for Fiscal 2005.
New taxes could be an issue then.
