Highway 331 is the only north-south route of coastal Walton County in the event of an emergency like a hurricane. Folks say it's about time that the DOT do its part.
Except for a four-lane section through nearly all of Defuniak Springs, Highway 331 is a two-lane road from the coast to the Alabama state line. Walton County is now the second fastest growing county in the country. Defuniak Springs mayor, Harold Carpenter, says four-laning is a necessity.
Last summer, Oris Rintala opened a Latin food restaurant along Highway 331 in Freeport. Four-laning would help folks come in and leave her business.
The four-laning is being pushed by Florida senior U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and Governor Jeb Bush.
The public hearing on the four-laning of Highway 331 is set for this Thursday morning. It'll run from ten till noon at the san Destin Hilton along Highway 98.
