BIRMINGHAM -- A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged Saturday with capital murder in the death of a 2-year-old boy -- Birmingham's 92nd homicide in 2006.
The suspect, Dexter Arrington, described by police as the boyfriend of the boy's mother, was booked in the Jefferson County Jail about 2 a.m. Saturday. He was being held without bond.
The boy, Samuel Perryman, died Thursday in the East Thomas neighborhood where he lived.
U.S. Marshal Marty Keely of Birmingham said the boy died of blunt-force trauma injuries.
The child's mother, Darlene Freeman, said she left the boy with another adult and went to work Thursday. She said she returned home and found the child dead.
"He had a knot on his head. ... He had welts on his legs," she said. "It was cruel what happened to my baby. It wasn't right."
Keely said Freeman and her three children were living at a house with the suspect and his sister. One of the children alerted neighbors to Samuel's injuries, Keely said.
Police confirmed that Samuel had two siblings, ages 6 and 7, who were in protective custody with the Department of Human Resources.
