Dothan city commissioners voted Tuesday to charge surrounding towns a little more to use the city's animal shelter.
Dothan's animal shelter is the only one in the entire Houston County area. This agreement will solidify fees and terms.
Included in those fees is the allocation to have area cities pay a fee if the animal is not adopted within 20 days.
“What we're really hoping is that it'll cover the cost of the stray animals. In no way is there an attempt to make money off of that. What we want to do is make sure the City of Dothan doesn't subsidize cost for other cities,” said Mike West of Dothan City Manager
Some commissioners say they believe a regional shelter would fix the problem.
