An international organization is trying to set a world record while giving food to an area community.
The international business "Sodexo" is holding a nationwide canned food drive Wednesday. It's called "Cans Across America," and locally Troy's campus dining service will be taking cans of food to help supply folks in Pike County.
The donated food will be given to the Collgedale Church of Christ's food bank located in Troy, Alabama.
Sodexo companies all over the U.S. will be taking food from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., trying to set a new Guinness world record for the most canned food donations raised during a single event.
“Not only does the food go right back into the county, but it joins the students, the general public. I mean, it's just a win/win for everyone involved,” said Kareta Purnell, general manager for Sodexo.
Here's how the drive works: if you donate nine cans you will get a free meal coupon at Stewart Dining Hall, 18 for two meals, and 22 cans to feed a family of five.
The coupon will be valid only for Friday, October 20 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
