County Commissioners Meeting

Updated: Tue 11:16 AM, Nov 11, 2003

Houston County Commissioners have turned down a request to help save jobs at the courthouse in Dothan.

State court officials announced last month that nine positions would be eliminated by the end of November because of budget cuts.

The commissioners agreed last week to at least consider saving one of those jobs.

The commissioners said they might give up proceeds from a new deferred prosecution program that generates about a thousand dollars a month.

They said they could divert those funds for six months and give the state legislature time to solve the budget crisis.

But yesterday, the request for help died without a motion.

Houston County officials say, since last week, they received a lot of phone calls from taxpayers who are against using county funds to save state jobs.
