People who are late with their bills in one Wiregrass city may soon be in the dark.

Hartford Mayor Gene Brannon and the city council are looking for ways to cut down on deadbeat utility customers. Some residents are one and two months late in paying their power bills. Often, they just leave town.

Right now, a homeowner has to pay a $125 deposit fee. But, many of those delinquent bills are far more than that amount.

Later this month, the council will look at charging a higher deposit for those utility customers with a history of late payments.
