Grant Police Chief Killed

arrest

A 17-year-old youth has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Grant Police Chief Verlon Lemaster. A second teen could be charged Monday.

Lemaster was killed Friday. He had accompanied Marshall and Madison County sheriff's deputies to the home on Cathedral Caverns Highway with an order to pickup one of the juveniles.

Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall says the 17-year-old charged in the slaying was wounded in the gunfire and remains in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

Marshall said the probe is handled by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation with help from the FBI. Marshall said the second youth, also 17, could be charged with capital murder.

The teens' names were not released because of their ages. Marshall says Chief Lemaster "never fired his gun." No other law officers were injured.
