Food prices are slightly higher this month according to a survey conducted by the Alabama Farmers Federation.

The federation said Alabamians paid approximately three-tenths of one percent more for 20 basic market basket items. The statewide average cost of those items is about $40.12. That's up 12 cents from July.

An increase in beef prices was to blame, but the federation said shoppers can find savings on produce and pork products this month. Poultry prices also declined. Besides higher prices for beef, dairy products also cost more, including milk and butter.

The federation said a market basket of 20 food items in northwest Alabama was cheapest at $37.01, while shoppers in south Alabama paid the most, an average of $41.42.

The survey was conducted the week of August 1 through 9.
