Just who will dispatch for the Coffee County Sheriff's Department?

That question has created a bidding competition between Elba and Enterprise.

Elba police dispatchers have handled calls for the Coffee County Sheriff's Department.

For the service, the county has paid Elba just under $10,000 a year. Chief Ronnie Whitworth says that's far below the cost of the service. Nearly half the calls answered by Elba dispatch goes to the sheriff's department

Enterprise Police Captain Mike Lolley shows where the department command center is being upgraded and expanded.

For a $30,000 per year fee, Enterprise is offering to take over dispatch for the sheriff's department.

Sheriff Ben Moates says he's getting the bids' and will let the board of commissioners decide who gets the dispatching contract.

Both the Enterprise and Elba Police Departments will continue to serve as E911 answer points for Coffee County.
