Stranded Whales

Pilot Whales

Two ships are tracking five pilot whales off the Florida Keys.

The whales were released Sunday, four months after they were beached with 23 others. Abourt 1,000 volunteers helped nurse them back to health.

The youngest whale squealed as he was lowered back into the water, but an expert says it wasn't a distress call. He says it was "a little kid getting excited."

Volunteers cried as the whales swam away.

Satellite monitoring devices are attached to the dorsal fins so marine experts can monitor the whales' progress and learn about the species.

The ships also have equipment to recapture the whales if they run into any trouble readjusting to the ocean.
