A lawyer for a former medical examiner has asked Governor Jeb Bush to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the state's use of discredited scientific evidence against his client in a murder case.
Doctor William Sybers pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing his first wife, Kay. In doing so, he was sentenced in May to only two years in prison, time he had already served.
He had won the reversal of a first-degree murder conviction.
Sybers continues to maintain his wife died of natural causes in 1991. He says he entered the plea in his best interest. His lawyer, Nathan Dershowitz, today wrote Bush that Sybers should never have been charged because tests that the prosecution said showed that his wife and been injected with a muscle relaxant have since proven to be wrong.
A Pensacola jury convicted Sybers. He's now 70.
