Flu season is here and county health department across Alabama are now administering the vaccine.

A recent study indicates most people don't recognize the dangers of the influenza virus.

State Public Health officials say people 65 years of age and older, regardless of health status, are among the groups targeted to receive flu shots. Alabama received its entire shipment of flu vaccine in September and supply is plentiful.

Doctors say the only people who shouldn't get flu shots are those who are severely allergic to chicken eggs -- or those who have had a severe allergic reaction to flu vaccines in the past.

Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control said October and November is the best time to receive a flu shot to be protected during peak flu season, which ends in March.
