Some good news for peanut farmers. The Agriculture Department has developed a peanut that might not sicken people to whom peanuts are poison.
About 1.5 million Americans can develop allergic reactions that, in some cases, could lead to death.
But, USDA researchers now have a special peanut that lacks one of the major allergens.
Researchers screened about 300 natural peanut varieties to find one without the allergen. But, their work is not over. They now are looking for varieties missing the other leading allergen.
Once they find this one, they will breed that peanut variety with the one they already have to create a new safer peanut.
