Liberia

The fighting in Liberia has opened up on a second front.

Rebels are attacking government forces Monday in the West African nation's second-biggest city, Buchanan. Meantime, fierce fighting between rebels and forces loyal to President Charles Taylor continues in the capital Monrovia.

The offensive in Buchanan is by the country's second-largest rebel group, which had mostly heeded cease-fire pledges until now. The city contains the only significant port still in government hands.

Tens of thousands of civilians had fled to the city of Buchanan in recent days, escaping the fighting in Monrovia, only to find combat now in Buchanan.
