Brighton police say their investigation into the shooting of a 4-year-old shows the boy was shot with a handgun left on the bed in the room where the boy was playing with his 4-year-old cousin.
The child, whose name has not been released, was shot Friday.
Lt. Ray Hubbart says the boy remained in critical condition Monday at Children's of Alabama hospital in Birmingham.
Police are still trying to determine which child handled the .38 Special pistol.
Hubbart says the boy's mother and another adult were watching TV in the living room when the shooting occurred.
