The 17th case of rabies has been confirmed in Houston County. A raccoon found Thursday has been tested and found to be positive for the disease.
According to the Houston County Health Department, a resident found the raccoon in a yard off of Girard Avenue inside the Dothan city limits.
The raccoon appeared to be sick and the resident requested the health department test it for rabies.
There was no known human or animal contact with the rabid animal.
Residents of the area are advised to take the following precautions.
Make sure your pets are current on their vaccinations. Also, caution children against playing with wild or stray animals.
Report stray animals to control officials, and if bitten, wash the wound, then seek medical attention, and don't forget to report the bite to the health department or animal control officials.
