Florida Flooding

Residents have been allowed to return to their homes near Florida's Lake Manatee, after flooding fears subsided.

Authorities urged the evacuation of more than 600 homes after a flood gate jammed on a dam on the rain-swollen lake about 40 miles Southeast of Tampa. A handful of homes flooded.

The malfunctioning flood gate caused water to stream into the 2,400-acre lake faster than it could be released.

Eventually, the gate was repaired and the lake has been draining steadily.

Residents were allowed to return home Sunday night because the flooding isn't as serious as expected. Officials say the extent of the damage isn't known yet, with damage assessments to begin Monday morning.
