Catfish Tariff

Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks says he supports a recommendation by the U.S. Commerce Department to impose a tariff on Vietnamese catfish.

Sparks said that the Vietnamese fish are not raised with the sanitary standards practiced by Alabama catfish farmers. He says the Vietnamese fish are raised in the rivers of the Mekong Delta.

The commerce department has recommended that a tariff ranging from 37-percent to 64-percent be charged on Vietnamese catfish. The recommendation must be approved by the International Trade Commission.

Sparks says the Vietnamese fish is being sold for less money than what it costs an Alabama farmer to raise a fish.
