Police need your help in finding the person behind a hit and run that put a five-year-old girl in the hospital.
Five-year-old Kentazia Carter was struck by a sports utility vehicle on West Fairview Street in Troy. Police suspect she was crossing the street with at least one other person going to either a friend or relative's home.
The estimated speed of the driver, who left the scene, was 40-miles-per-hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone.
"It was the day before Labor Day. So, you really don't know if they may have been in Troy visiting. Those are things our investigation will reveal," said Sergeant Benny Scarbrough of Troy Police.
Police say witnesses told them the driver did slow down after the collision, but then fled the scene.
Police say the person responsible could face up to 10 years in prison for leaving a scene with injuries.
Carter suffered a broken leg, a broken pelvis, a back injury, and internal injuries. She underwent surgery on her ear at Children's Hospital.
Carter was just enrolled in kindergarten at Troy Elementary School.
Leaders there say her class is writing letters of support to encourage a speedy recovery.
“School should be a community. When you have 18 children in a classroom, they become very close, and even this kindergarten, although they are five-years-old. She's going to miss school, and that was already a concern with the family," said Principal Geoffrey Spann of Troy Elementary School.
Police need your help in locating the driver of the vehicle.
The SUV is described as a sky blue Ford Expedition with tinted windows and a state of Alabama "Helping Schools" tag.
