Local Artist in New York City

The works' of a Wiregrass native recently became the subject of an exhibit at the New York Metropolitan of Art in Manhattan.

New York Times Photographer Chester Higgins Jr. is a New Brockton native.

In the early 1960's Higgins graduated from a segregated high school and caught on film the civil rights' struggle across the south.

Higgins also portrays average people in his work, especially those from his native south.

New Brockton Mayor Charles Cole was Chester's High School teacher. "He was always amazed by different things like science and many other things, and photography," he said.

Mayor Cole hopes to have several of the large photos used in the art exhibit placed prominently around Coffee County.
