Walton County Beaches

South Walton County traditionally ranks as one of the top beaches in the country, but looks can be deceiving.

State and local environmental experts believe a sand re-nourishment project is critical for its future.

Marine scientist Brad Pickel is the director of beach management for the Walton County Tourist Development Council. He says portions of the 26-miles of beaches are in trouble. A five mile stretch of Miramar Beach is of critical concern. In just four years, some 30-feet of sand has disappeared due to tropical storms and hurricanes.

Walton County and Destin may share the expense of a $15 million beach re-nourishment project. The white sands off the Destin Pass would be pumped in for the restoration project.

Pickel is doing extensive studies on the amount of beach being lost. He hopes restoration can get underway-early next year.

Before beach re-nourishment can become a reality, several public hearings will be held over coming months in Walton County.
