This year's Florida public school grades show improvement, with more schools getting As and fewer getting Fs.

The most important component when calculating school grades is now students did this spring on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or F-CAT.

But other criteria are also used, such as learning gains and improvement of lower-performing students at each school.

From last year to this year, the number of A and B schools has risen from 1,447 to 1,799. The number of D and F schools has dropped from 249 to 176.

Of the schools graded this year, 60-percent have improved two letter grades or have retained last year's A rating. This makes them eligible for so-called School Recognition Funds from the state.

There are 35 F schools this year, down from the 64 last year.
