He reportedly had a little wine, but there's no indication he was drunk.
So says an Arizona prosecutor about Thomas O'Brien, who resigned as bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix. O'Brien had been charged with leaving the scene of a deadly hit-and-run accident over the weekend.
Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley says O'Brien told authorities he had a small amount of sacramental wine in a church service before the accident. But Romley said there's no indication he was impaired.
A diocese spokeswoman said it's a sad day, and that O'Brien's decision to resign was "very difficult." But she said the bishop wanted the focus to return to "the good work of the church."
