Welfare Fraud Conviction

A Dothan woman, accused of welfare fraud has pleaded guilty.

Twenty-nine-year-old Maria Orton pleaded guilty to stealing more than $8,000 of food stamp benefits, by misrepresenting her household income.

She was given a two-year suspended sentence, placed on probation for three years, fined $1000 dollars and ordered to pay restitution.

Right now, there are welfare fraud cases pending against other people in 38 counties across the state, including Pike and Coffee Counties.
