Forensic Lab Grant

State leaders say they are tired of the backlog in Alabama’s forensic labs.

U.S Senator Richard Shelby says the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is receiving over $700,000.

The money is for improvements to the crime lab infrastructures, which will make the process more efficient and cost effective.

Another $400,000 is going to reduce the backlog through in-house analysis and data review.

“I hope they can do this very often, to keep the workload down and [provide] answers to people's cases, because evidently murder is never going to stop,” said Cheryl Burgoon, a victim's mother.

It can take district attorneys two to three years to get results back for a case.
