Holiday Travel

Its getaway day as millions get ready to hit the highways and interstates for the Independence Day weekend. It's also the start of the summer travel season.

AAA says that 37.4 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home the Fourth of July weekend -- the highest total for that holiday in at least nine years.

About 4.3 million are projected to travel by air, down two percent from last year.

Alabama State troopers along with county and municipal law enforcement agencies will step up patrols. Alabama motorists can
expect to encounter checkpoints statewide.

Officers say they will take a zero-tolerance approach toward drunk drivers and enforce seat belt and child restraint laws.
