Houston County has been named as the top county in the Wiregrass.
The Association of County Commissioners in Alabama voted and named Houston County as its winner for this year's Excellence in County Government award.
The county received the award for taking over and maintaining what was once state-owned Chattahoochee Park.
“It could be closed and locked and a beautiful piece of God's earth that no one could get to but instead, it's being used real, real well and we just appreciate the association recognizing us for our efforts,” said Chairman Mark Culver of the Houston County Commission.
The county was given the award, under the 'Urban Category'.
Houston County’s population growth spiked to more than 96,000 people last year.
