Houston County Jail

Sheriff Lamar Glover says a new program at the Houston County Jail that costs very little, is paying off in more ways than one.

By law, prisoners get one hour of fresh air and exercise each day. So, the sheriff's department has purchased some recreational equipment for inmates.

Male inmates get to play basketball and toss around a football. Female inmates get to shoot baskets and play volleyball.

Sheriff Glover says the program helps inmates work off steam and stay out of trouble.

The recreational equipment cost less than $400 and the inmates actually paid for it themselves.

Sheriff Glover bought the gear with profits from the jail commissary where inmates buy snacks and toiletry items.
