Early Morning Fire

Dothan firefighters got a scare Tuesday morning when they responded to a fire on East Newton Street.

When the first units arrived on the scene around 3 a.m., it appeared the old peanut mill was in flames and that could have forced the evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood.

But, it turned out to be a vacant house across the street. The wood frame structure was engulfed in flames by the time the fire department got the call. There was still some concern blowing embers might spread to the peanut mill but firefighters had everything under control in less than half-an-hour.

Fire officials say there was no electricity in the abandoned home and they're suspicious about how the fire started.

The cause is still under investigation.
