The AG is currently touring the state flanked by local leaders and law enforcement to discuss revisions to the community notification act to monitor sex offenders and DUI enforcement revisions.
Tthis morning though, he issued a solid follow up to the governors announcement last week of a task force to stop illegal gaming in the state of Alabama.
King says according to the law as it stands, though he opposes any gambling in the state, that the proposed Country Crossing project is legal in Houston county and always will be. Unless voters decide to change the laws that are already in place.
This is just a small part of what the Attorney General said in reference to gaming in Houston County today:
”in the mid 1990s voters approved an amendment to the Alabama constitution and it says that you can have gambling legally in Houston county
I'm going to defend the law and I'm not going to let anyone else come in and re-write the law in an improper venue and an improper way. The proper place to address this is in the legislature and I've been doing it. Just because it's hard or i can't get my way in the legislature, doesn't provide a forum for me to decide that i going to use or abuse my office to do it in a different way.
I'm not going to do it and I'm not going to let anyone else do it”
The Attorney General said that his proposal is ultimately a yes/no vote on *all* electronic bingo across the state, leaving it up to the people to decide. King added that it's reasonable to think a vote could come up soon.
