There certainly was no confusing them with any other car on the road.

Volkswagen's classic Beetle has officially reached the end of the line. The German automaker will stop making the original rear-engined "bug" later this year.

A plant in Mexico has been the only one making the car since 1978.

The Beetle's first version was made in 1934, when Adolf Hitler called for a "people's car," or in German, a Volkswagen. It eventually became hugely popular, with more than 21 million bugs sold, but VW says demand has waned the past few decades.

VW continues producing the New Beetle, a modernized successor that debuted five years ago and maintains a bit of the old classic's unique shape.
