Senate Extends Tax Credit

The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly voted to extend the child tax credit to more parents.

It voted 94 to two to give more than six million low-income families a $400 check for each of their children.

Democrats had been pushing hard for the increased child tax credit, and republicans finally gave in.

The provision will help not only low-income workers, but also military parents who have served in combat zones.

The House has to approve the legislation by late this month for them to get checks at the same time.

Twenty five million middle-income households will benefit from the $1,000 child tax credit.

House republican leaders don't think much of giving bigger benefits to workers who don't pay income taxes.
