A controversial clinic to treat drug addicts in Houston County could officially open for business next month.

The Houston Treatment Center has been waiting to open on Highway 84 West for about a year. It would supply methadone to people addicted to narcotics.

The clinic was originally supposed to be in Dothan, but local officials enforced strict zoning laws to keep it out.

Doctor Henry Born obtained a "Certificate of Need" to open the clinic in Wicksburg a year and a half ago.

But the case was put on hold after residents there objected and Houston County Commissioners convinced state officials to hear their side.

A public hearing was held last month and a court order that kept the clinic from opening was lifted the next day.

Houston County Attorney Gary Sherrer says an official ruling is pending, but clinic officials expect the facility to pass final inspection later this month and be cleared to open.
