The Air Force will court-martial a fighter pilot who killed four Canadian soldiers with friendly fire in Afghanistan.
Major Harry Schmidt refused to agree to an administrative hearing on lesser charges. He says he doesn't think he'd get a fair hearing and the Air Force should have told him allies would be doing live-fire exercises on the night in question.
Charges against him could include involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and dereliction of duty, with a possible term of 64 years if convicted.
The officer overseeing the case has recommended dropping charges against Schmidt's partner on the mission.
The two members of the Illinois National Guard were the first Air Force pilots to face the possibility of homicide charges because of friendly fire during combat.
