Confederate Flag Update

Some residents in Crestview consider the Confederate Flag a symbol of hatred, while others see it as part of southern heritage.

And, tempers flew during a debate on the Confederate Flag's future in Crestview.

It began flying 45-years ago in honor of Bill Lundy, the last Civil War Veteran in Florida who died at the age of 109. The request to take it down comes from the nation's two largest civil rights organizations, the NAACP and Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

But, a majority at the city council meeting supports flying the Confederate Flag and that it's a symbol of southern heritage.

After more than two hours of debate, the council voted to continue to fly the flag. But, they would like a private or civic organization to maintain its upkeep at Confederate Park.
