The Vernon city council fired its longtime fire chief and the locks to the fire department were changed.
Firefighters say they have no way to get to their equipment in the event of an emergency.
Several Vernon volunteer firefighters got into a heated argument with city council president John Cook following the locks being changed at the department.
This followed the council's unanimous decision to remove Fire Chief James Boswell from his post. Chief Boswell is also the town's mayor.
Firefighters say under instruction from legal counsel, Boswell will not discuss his termination as Vernon’s fire chief. He's been with the department since the 1960's.
Several volunteer firefighters say they will respond if called to a fire or accident, but they may not be able to get into the building:
The Vernon city council has appointed Richard Woodham as the new fire chief. It's not clear how many volunteers will remain with the department.
