Coffee County Jail Contraband Problem

Contraband is an ongoing problem at prisons across the tri-states region. This week, several surprise inspections found banned items at the Coffee County Jail.

Jail administrator Ruth Scheipe displays a collection of the confiscated material.

There's a no smoking policy at the facility and most of the banned material was cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Correctional officers also discovered several homemade knives made out of scissors and bed sheets.

"We’re tightening security of our work release inmates program. We are doing full searches of the facility, anything entering the jail, and especially when they leave and come back,” said Scheipe.

In many cases, Scheipe believes it may be friends and family members leaving the items close to the security fence.

Some of the material reportedly also came in through the jail's work release inmates.
