The New Brockton City council took a giant step this week in the ongoing process to eliminate abandoned homes and structures in the city.
The council chose an Elba company to do demolition work for just under $20,000.
Under phase one of a state grant, the removal process will take place at no cost to the property owner.
Ten structures will be demolished. Once those are completed, additional public eyesores will be torn down during phase two.
The cities of Geneva and Kinston have also discussed applying for similar state grants to help improve the overall look of those towns.
