State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks has established a toll-free hotline for farmers in need of disaster assistance. He says many farmers who are still feeling the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina now face additional hardships due to the lingering drought.
Sparks said farmers still face problems getting Federal Crop Insurance claims processed following disasters in previous years.
Beginning August tenth through November first, farmers in need of help are urged to call and share their concerns with agriculture officials. Callers will be asked to leave a voice message and a summary of the problems experienced.
Sparks said a department employee will return the call and offer their assistance to help recover the loss of income.
The toll-free number is 1-800-951-1275.
