A Huntsville man drowned after apparently getting a cramp while swimming with friends at Joe Wheeler State Park.
Alabama Marine Police Sgt. Kerry Bradford said the body of Valencia Flores, 24, was recovered by rescue workers about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Bradford said authorities received the call about the incident about 2 p.m. Park superintendent Tim Haney said the drowning occurred at an area known as the swimming beach.
Other swimmers jumped in to try and save Flores but were unsuccessful.
Paul Blankenship, one of the swimmers that tried to save the victim, said Flores had made it to a dock.
"He grabbed the dock but he went down, almost like something dragged him under," Blankenship told the TimesDaily. "I don't know why he couldn't hold it."
