Alabama state troopers, along with county and municipal law enforcement agencies are targeting seat belt enforcement for the two weeks starting Monday, May 19.

The agencies will participate in the third annual "Click it or Ticket" campaign. State Public Safety director Colonel W.M.
Coppage said the zero-tolerance policy will be firm.

Coppage said the goal is to increase seat belt usage among Alabama driver and passenger from 79 to 85-percent. A survey conducted by the National Highway Administration finds 75-percent of all Americans use their seat belts while driving.

In Alabama, there's a $25 fine if a driver or passenger fails to wear seatbelts. If children aren't properly restrained, the fine is ten-dollars.

The nationwide "Click it or Ticket" campaign ends Sunday, June 1.
