House Demolition Grant

Geneva officials are hoping to receive word from Montgomery on a housing demolition grant request.

Mayor Karen Simmons told the Geneva City Council, the city will ask for $200,000 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The money would be earmarked for the removal of old, dilapidated homes and other structures.

If approved it would not cost the property owner anything to have the structure taken down and removed.

"They violate our nuisance ordinance, and if they don't take advantage of the grants we are trying to get. These folks will eventually be served with nuisance complaints and then have to pay for it themselves," said Mayor Simmons.

Later this summer the New Brockton Council is expected to open bids by companies interested in performing their demolition work.

One year-ago the town was awarded a similar grant.
