A former Bay County medical examiner convicted of murdering his wife 12 years ago was freed Monday after the state dropped the murder case when faced with a retrial.
Dr. William Sybers then pled guilty to manslaughter and was released with time served.
Sybers was convicted two years ago in the 1991 killing of his wife, Kay. Prosecutors maintained he had her body embalmed immediately after her death to hide evidence she had been poisoned.
But, an appeals court overturned the verdict in February sending the case back to circuit court.
State Attorney Harry Shorstein decided not to retry Sybers, dropping the murder charge.
Pulmonary experts agreed with a defense theory that Kay Sybers died from an acute asthma attack at the couple's Panama City Beach home.
