Alabama Marine Police are out in force this holiday weekend. Over the Fourth of July weekend, every marine police officer is working as vacationers flock to lakes, rivers and beaches.
Marine police officer Kimberly Moeller says officers will be checking for licenses and life vests.
They will hand out free t-shirts to children who have their life vests on.
Alabama residents are required to have boating licenses to pilot jet skis or motorized boats, but boaters from out of state are not.
Moeller says out-of-state boaters should be prepared to show a driver's license to prove they don't live in Alabama.
State law requires that children under eight years of age must wear life vests.
Last year, 16 people died on Alabama lakes, rivers and bays. This year, waterway accidents already have claimed 14 lives.
